World War II - December 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946

Korean War - June 25, 1950 - January 31, 1955

Vietnam Era - February 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975

Lebanon/Grenada - August 24, 1982 - July 31, 1984

Operation Just Cause - Panama - December 20, 1989 - January 31, 1990

​*Because eligibility dates remain open, all members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.

MEMBERSHIP ELIGIBILITY

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.
